Spring (March – May)

  • Annual Camellia Festival (March) Contest for professional growers, novice gardeners, and children around the region to enter their camellia blooms. Raffle with proceeds to benefit the Sandhills Camellia Society.
  • Midland Crafter’s Day (March) Started in October of 2003, Crafter’s Day to showcase the wares of artists from the area as well as those from across the state and the nation.
  • Pinehurst Harness Track Matinee Races (April) The Matinee Races, presented by the Pinehurst Parks and Recreation Department and the Pinehurst Driving and Training Club, have been a highlight of the spring season in Pinehurst, featuring a special opening ceremony that is followed by eight individual races and a post-parade commemorating the rich history of the Harness Track.  Additional entertainment, equestrian exhibits, harness racing memorabilia and carriages will be on display.

  • Tour de Moore International Bicycle Race (April) While you may not be able to ride the Tour de France, you can enjoy a fully-supported, hilly, challenging and fun ride around beautiful Moore County in the heart of the Sandhills. Riders from all over North Carolina and neighboring States look forward to this annual bike festival.
  • Stoneybrook Steeplechase (April) The Carolina Horse Park has become the new permanent home of the race as well as the site for other nationally recognized equestrian competitions throughout the year. Each year nearly 10,000 people come to the Stoneybrook Steeplechase to watch nationally acclaimed horses, jockeys and trainers vie for over $50,000 in purse money. Stoneybrook features an ever-growing array of activities for both children and adults. From the traditional tailgate and hat contests to stick horse races, expansive Kid Zone, vendor area, pub tent, beer tent and opening ceremonies, there is something for everyone.

Summer (June – August)

  • North and South Amatuer Golf Tournaments Entries are open to male and female golfers who are between the ages of 15 and 18. Contestants must not have reached their nineteenth birthday by specified date, or must not have started college. All applicants must conform to the USGA Rules of Amateur Status and meet the requirements of the USGA Gender Policy. 54-holes of stroke play will determine the Champion.  Play will be divided into two divisions: Boys and Girls. A full field will consist of 90 boys and 90 girls.

  • Annual 4th of July Celebration in Aberdeen The Town of Aberdeen’s Annual Celebration, sponsored by the Aberdeen Parks and Recreation Department, will offer entertainment and activities for people of all ages. There will be several food vendors present selling funnel cakes, barbecue, lemonade, hot dogs, Philly steak sandwiches, tacos, sodas, Italian ices, popcorn, and cotton candy. Grab your blankets and lawn chairs and bring the family and friends to enjoy one of the largest and most exciting fireworks displays in the area.
  • Annual Pet Parade in Downtown Pinehurst The fun begins at Tufts Memorial Park in the Village Center with the Patriotic Pet Competition. Pets can be registered in one of eight categories for judging including best dressed, most spots, and most talented. Stick around after the parade for the Antique Cars Display, Music, Face Painting, and The Sandhills Farmers Market Vendors offering fresh fruit, veggies and baked goods.

    The World Championship is the world’s largest and most prestigious event for kids ages 12 and under. The full-length documentary The Short Game was filmed during the 2012 World Championship, and last year the field featured 1375 participants from 44 states and 48 countries

  • Robbins Farmer’s Day Festival (July/August)
    Annual Wagon Train Festival, parade of 600+ horses, crafts, entertainment and much more. Thursday there is a 5K Run/Walk and Gospel music on the Railroad Stage. Friday evening events include street dances, a country music show, clogging, square dancing, and a carnival type atmosphere where 10,000 plus enjoy all the activities. Entertainment, special demonstrations, arts/crafts and parade on Saturday.

  • Kitchen and Moore Home Tour (September)
    The Kitchens and Moore House Tour is sponsored annually as a fundraiser for Youth Development, Moore County 4-H Clubs, Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina, and other youth groups. Each house features a popular chef in the kitchen serving a taste of a favorite recipe.
  • Annual Malcolm Blue Farm Craft & Farm Skills Days (September)
    Music and entertainment throughout the day for guests. Festival proceeds will be used for the Stone Soup Children’s Museum, Programming, restoration of the Grist Mill and preservation of the Stable & Farm Buildings. The Festival is presented by the Malcolm Blue Historical Society and supported by hundreds of dedicated Volunteers, Sponsors and Craftsmen.   • Annual Candor Bluegrass Festival (October)
    Annual Candor Bluegrass Festival is held at the Candor Lion’s Club. Admission is free. Bring your own chair
  • Moore County Agricultural Fair (October)
    The fairgrounds are located at 3699 US-15 501 Hwy in Carthage, North Carolina. The fair features a celebration for those near and far that showcases all that the county has to offer. There are plenty of things to do and see for young and old such as children’s activities, entertainment, food and merchandise vendors, livestock and agricultural competitions and much, much more.

  • Holly Arts & Crafts Festival (October)
    This Annual Festival combines the talents of over 100 hand-crafters in a variety of genres – from woodworking to glass, stitched art to lawn ornaments, hand-crafted jewelry to metal sculpture. Downtown shops offer sales and specials and a food court has a variety of offerings. Sponsored by the Pinehurst Business Guild.
  • NC Symphony Holiday Pops Concert (November)
    Sparkling carols, seasonal and classical favorites and a sing-a-long will get you in the holiday spirit. This concert always sells out. Don’t get left out in the cold — buy your tickets in advance!
  • Festival of Trees & Lights (November)
    The Festival of Trees is a showcase of over 200 decorated holiday trees, wreaths, gift baskets and gingerbread houses displayed throughout a winter wonderland. The festival includes a silent auction, live entertainment, Festival Marketplace and more.

  • Weymouth Center Christmas House Tour (December)
    “Where the Treetops Glisten” a White Christmas at Weymouth, celebrating the music of Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, and George Gershwin. The local garden clubs decorate Weymouth Center in live greens along with festive Christmas decorations. Refreshments, musical entertainment throughout the day.

    The Moore County Driving Club decorates their horses and carriages for Christmas and drives them through the historic district in downtown Southern Pines. This parade is sure to get you into the holiday spirit

  • First Eve in Downtown Southern Pines (December 31)
    First Eve in Downtown Southern Pines features: live music, carnival games, singing contests, face painting, and much more. The highlight of the evening is the countdown to the pinecone drop at 8:00pm. Gather your family and friends for this year’s Winter Wonderland brought to you by Southern Pines Business Association and Southern Pines Recreation & Parks Department.
  • Annual Spelling Bee for Literacy (January-February)
    Fifteen teams representing an array of businesses, causes and civic groups will bring their good humor and spelling talents to bear this afternoon for the 11th annual Moore County Literacy Council’s Spelling Bee. Each team will have three members. Most of the teams don silly costumes and bear Bee-themed names. Each team and its supporters also is allowed to perform a brief skit when first introduced. Awards will be given this year for best speller, best costumes and best “buzz,” or the team with the most enthusiastic audience response.

  • Springfest (April) Springfest is held the last Saturday in April from 10am to 4pm in historic downtown Southern Pines. Free to attend, both sides of Broad Street are blocked off for 2 blocks. Join us for arts, crafts, games, rides, food, entertainment, and more! We host over 160 vendors from all around North Carolina and the country. Enjoy beautiful artwork and crafts including paintings, jewelry, metal art, photography, woodwork, designs from nature, and other amazing creations. This event is held in conjunction with Tour de Moore, an annual bicycle race in Moore County, and is co-sponsored by the Town of Southern Pines.

  • Carthage Buggy Festival (April) Started in 1989, the Carthage Buggy Festival is a celebration of the rich history of Carthage, North Carolina. The Buggy Festival is held each year to commemorate the famous Tyson and Jones Buggy Factory that, from the mid-1800’s to the 1920’s, produced the carriages that were essential to life in rural North Carolina. Over 125 food and craft vendors surround the Historic Courthouse. A stage is set up in front of the Courthouse, and is host to a variety of entertainment, including cloggers and bands playing gospel, country, and southern rock music. Children’s rides are always provided free of charge. An impressive display of buggies and historic tractors can be found, and one of the largest classic car shows in the area also takes place.

  • First Fridays in Downtown Southern Pines (April-October) “First Friday” is a monthly community non-profit event, for people of all ages in the Southern Pines area. As “First Friday” is a community event, it will be provided for through sponsorship and volunteer effort, will be free of charge to the public, and will be family-friendly. Participants will have access to food, beverages, live music and other forms of entertainment, which will enhance the enjoyment of each occasion.

  • Outdoor Jazz Band Concerts in Pinehurst (June-August)
  • Fine Art Festival (June-August) The Arts Council of Moore County (ACMC) created the Fine Arts Festival in 1980 to provide incentive for local artists to improve their technique and a place to showcase and sell their artwork. The festival has since grown into a major exhibit featuring artwork by artists from all over the country. The event also includes an art competition where the entries are judged and cash prizes and ribbons are awarded.
  • 4th of July Celebrations and Fireworks (July)
  • Annual Carthage 4th of July Parade Annual parade with floats, cars, bands, ROTC, Marine Color Guard and more. Runs along Monroe Street to the County Courthouse. The Carthage Rotary Club will again be hosting the Fourth of July Parade.

  • Fireworks at the Fair Barn There is lots of fun and games for children of all ages including pony and hayrides, face painting, bounce houses, and more to delight young and old! Food and beverages will be sold by local caterers including AJ’s Concessions, What’s Fore Lunch, Coldstone Creamery & Rita’s Italian Ice, or bring your own picnic favorites. Don’t forget your lawn chairs and blankets! The fabulous fireworks are provided by Atlanta Pyrotechnics.

  • Sunrise Blues Crawl in Downtown Southern Pines (July) The Sunrise Theater is the center of this “pub-crawl” inspired event that includes a variety of “juke-joint” venues and artists scattered throughout downtown Southern Pines; all within walking distance of The Sunrise. With an all-access wristband sold by Sunrise Theater, participants can sample different Blues musical styles, while enjoying the libations and food of the unique restaurants, wine cellars, and pubs each hosting different bands.

  • Annual North Carolina Peach Festival in Candor (July) The N.C. Peach Festival is a celebration of the peach growing heritage prevalent in the Candor and Sandhills area. It is held annually the third Saturday in July from 10:00am to 5:00pm at  Fitzgerald Park in  Candor. The event begins with a festive and large parade at 10:00 a.m. to kick-off an exciting day of festival activities. Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy our live entertainment line-up. There are plenty of vendors, games, rides for the kids, food galore, and of course, all the yummy peaches you can carry home! See beautiful Montgomery County via helicopter tours. Kids’ activities include bungee trampoline, rock wall, bounce houses, bungee jump, miniature train rides, gyro ride, camel ride, petting zoo, zipline, and more! They also have a magician/comedian performing at this year’s festival!Admission is free.

Fall (September – November)

  • Annual Labor Day Wine Festival (September)
    The festival will feature more than 90 international wineries, award-winning chefs and more than a dozen seminars, tastings, culinary demonstrations and nightly festivities.
  • Annual Pinehurst Oktoberfest (September)
    Oktoberfest is at the Village Arboretum.  Music and dancing will take place under the tent. Sandhills Farmers Green Market Vendors will be onsite selling local produce and baked goods. The kids can enjoy inflatables, games, face painting and contests.  German Brats and sauerkraut, goulash, hot dogs & more. Proceeds from Beer & Wine sales benefits the Sandhills Kiwanis Club. Admission is free.

  • Annual Sardine Festival (October)
    The Annual Sardine Festival is held at Aberdeen Lake Park. Everyone is invited to join their family, friends, neighbors, Town officials and staff at Aberdeen Lake Park for a lunch of sardines, crackers, Moon Pies, RC Colas, and Cokes. The sardines and other delicacies are free, but people are encouraged to make a small donation. The donations support youth athletic programs in Aberdeen and across Moore County. The Sardine Festival started many years ago when the late Mr. Randall Moss wanted to eat his lunch of sardines and crackers in his office. His daughter Kay promptly told him to take that smelly lunch somewhere else…like eat it at the park. Randall did just that and invited all his friends to join him! Thus the unique Sardine Festival was created at Aberdeen Lake Park! Through the years many Sardine Queens have been crowned. All have been proud title holders and represented the Festival extremely well in the community.

Winter (December – February)

  • Annual Reindeer Run (December)
    The area’s most popular running event keeps getting bigger, and keeps getting better! The 5k curves through the historic downtown neighborhoods of Aberdeen, NC with rolling hills and wide turns. The 12ks of Christmas incorporates the 5k route along with a scenic tour of Bethesda, and the Malcolm Blue Farm. Both courses finish on a sloping downhill toward downtown Aberdeen and historic Union Station. This fun community event is for everyone from serious runners to recreational walkers, families, and pets. Join in the holiday cheer with a run or walk and the Reindeer Fun Run After Party featuring a Kids Zone.

    The Candlelight Tour of Homes has become an enduring holiday tradition in the Sandhills, providing guests from around the region (and beyond) the chance to tour five gorgeous homes decked out in holiday finery.
  • Terpsichore’s Nutcracker annual performance (December)
    A fresh new look has been given to the performance of one of the most enchanting signs that the holiday season is in full swing. Terpsichore, the Southern Pines dance studio, presents “The Nutcracker” at the Owens Auditorium of Sandhills Community College.
